Why is the Basement Wet?
There are many reasons why you mat have a wet basement?
Some simple causes that should be ruled out before installing a waterproofing system are:
- Leaking window wells
- Poor grading around the home
- Sump pump failure
- Ineffective sump pumps
- Blocked gutters
- Clogged downspouts
The most common, and most problematic reasons for water intrusion are:
- High Water Table. The water table in your area exists around and under your home. It fluctuates based on rainfall and melting snow. Many homeowners experience water entry when the water table gets high.
- Hydro Static Pressure. Water exists under and around your home before it seeps into the soil. This water becomes pressurized. Raised pressure levels cause the water to seek entry through cracks and crevices in walls and floors. It can be helpful to think of pushing a beach ball into a pool.
- Settlement. The earth and soil around your home is continually settling. The resulting movement can shift your foundation. This can cause your foundation to shift and crack allowing water into and under your walls and floor.

Why Should I fix it?
Health - The number one reason to fix your moisture problem is the health of yourself and your family. Anywhere between 40 and 50 % of the air you breathe on your first floor comes from your basement or crawl space. Moisture causes mold and mildew growth. These both pose serious health risks including things such as serious breathing problems and in some cases even fatal reactions.
Value - The second reason is value. Having water in your home greatly reduces its resale value. Many real estate experts estimate that a wet basement or crawl space can reduce the value of a home by a full 25%.
Living Space - The third is extra living space. Before you invest $20,000-$40,000 in finishing your basement, you should make sure that it is waterproofed properly. We have been called out countless times to homes with beautiful finished basements that have been devastated by water damage because the proper waterproofing procedures were not taken prior to the finishing. Even if you don't plan to fully finish your basement, our closed waterproofing system will create a dry, healthy, and clean looking space that you will enjoy spending time in.
What are my Basement Waterproofing Options?
When you are researching your options you may find that some companies recommend an exterior drainage systems or sealing procedures. We believe the only truly effective way to rid a home of its moisture problem is with an interior drainage system. Why?
Sealing
Painting the walls with a waterproofing sealant really only traps the water in the walls. This method provides a false sense of security. The water is still there and can eventually lead to structural problems in the foundation. This is a quick fix that will not solve your water problems for the long term.
